Yup, I did it. A while back I blogged about what questions to ask a potential family photographer before you hire them. Actually, even better, I blogged about the 'less obvious' questions to ask. We all know we need to ask about availability, steps in the process, will they take nice pictures and make you look good, etc.... But I highlighted some other questions you might not have thought of - you don't know what you don't know, right?
Why does that make me GUILTY?
Because what I was really doing was finding a way to tell you about how what I do is a little (or a lot!) different than what many other Toronto family photographers do.
So I'm going to own that and just go ahead and answer those questions as if you were asking them to me. I'll call it:
WHY HIRE FUN LOVE PHOTOGRAPHY FOR YOUR FAMILY PHOTOS!
Here goes.... assuming you browse my portfolio and like my style of imagery, let's get into those more detailed questions:
1) Can I count on you to create great images for MY family? (Are you accredited? Have you earned recognition in the industry and won awards and competitions?)YES! Yes, and Yes and Yes! I am accredited through the PPOC - the Professional Photographers of Canada, in both child portraiture and newborn photography. That means I have built a portfolio that shows a command of the technology that goes into creating beautiful images - I have the skills to consistently create images that are in good focus, show good composition and depth of field, and are compelling and interesting. The PPOC has also recognized my images as being worthy for display at the national level.
Through NAPCP, the National Association of Professional Child Photographers, I have earned Master Photographer designations in both Child Portraiture and Family Portraiture - again underlining that I consistently create professional quality images.
Last but not least, I have entered, and both earned merit, placed in the top 3, and WON, a number of image competitions, including my most recent win in the 'Real Life' category of the NAPCP Inspired Gallery Event Print Competition. I've also had my images awarded merits, and popular-vote top 10% designations in various other contests.
Photographers who are not accredited might be able to create great images under great conditions, but a family photo session is fast-paced and can bring a variety of challenges to a photographer (lighting conditions, weather, toddler tantrums etc.!). A less experienced photographer may not be able to create great images in the face of the inevitable challenges.
So short story - yes! We'll create great images together - beautiful custom images for your family!
Yes! Family portraiture is a custom, and quite an intimate, experience. In almost all cases, I'll meet with you ahead of time to learn about you and your family, what your kids and spouse are all about, and what moments you want to remember. That way, when we meet for the portrait session, I'm prepared to tell your family story! I'm also prepared to meet each member of your family where they are - shy, too cool for school, super happy - whatever!
I'll also want to learn about how you might wish to display your portraits in your home - it's great to know ahead of time if we might be creating photos for an album, or, say, a statement piece over the fireplace.
All that, plus, it's great to not be strangers when the session starts! I'll witness all the love in your family, and the tantrums too, and I'm here for it!
There’s nothing worse than getting to see the photos from your session for the first time and immediately seeing that your family outfits don’t quite match, or your hairstyle was off, your skirt too short or you didn’t quite get your makeup right. While you certainly don’t have to enlist the services of a professional if you are comfortable in this department, I am happy to arrange for a Hair and Makeup Artist to come right to your home before your session. I am also there for you to consult on your wardrobe choices – or even better, I can connect you to the tailored services of a wardrobe and style professional.
That’s one less thing on your already busy mom-plate!
Yes! I don't believe in giving my clients 'homework' - I'm there for you every step of the way to consult on everything from where to hang your wall portraits to what to gift everyone's favourite Aunt for the holidays.
Online galleries with hundreds of images to choose from very quickly become overwhelming and a chore to poke through. I can't tell you how many clients got bogged down in that process back when I used that method.
I take the time to get together with you and present you with an already-curated collection of images, then actually sit beside you and guide you through the selection process - eating the elephant one bite at a time! I'm right there to help you with any retouching, cropping, grouping and 'black & white' questions you come up with - no emailing back and forth! Using design knowledge and skills, I will help you select the right images for the wall, the best images that create the perfect story for you album, and the best gifts for grandparents, friends and family.
Your images will be best enjoyed in-hand or on the wall – if they get stuck nowhere but in digital format on your phone, hard drive or USB key, they’ll eventually be forgotten or disappear. I will create for you professional, archival quality wall mounts, albums and prints because I truly care about the impact these heirloom family images will have on your life long-term.
Through years of printing portraits for families, I have the knowledge of how to turn a digital image into a printed product – with accurate colour representation and technical reproduction. I know the technical details of the custom products you are investing in, and can also advise on the best choices of materials, colours and designs for your home.
Knowing how to layout albums to artfully tell your family story, and knowing how to plan, curate and hang a portrait wall in your home are key. (Hey, want to learn more about Planning and Curating Your Family Portrait Wall? Grab my free guide here.)
Heck yes! (See number 5 above). I will see you through not only the session prep and shoot day, but also through the image selection and art-design process all the way through to delivering your artwork and hanging it on your walls. I totally get how busy you are and I want to ensure that your images are complete and in place for you to enjoy as soon as possible. I'll make sure you are taken care of every step of the way and will be there to tweak anything that needs amendment or upgrade. Hey, bet we'll even end up as friends!
Family portraiture is an investment, and one you want to get right within an experience that will best serve you and your busy life – having a photographer that goes the extra mile for you is a form of self-care, right? I've got your back!
